A lovely, slow-paced murder mystery set in medieval England. Our heroes are a very small band of traveling players, and a lot of the book is simply about life and acting in 1434. The first murder doesn't even happen until over a hundred pages in, and the actual mystery involves Lollards, so it helps to know some religious history, but it's not really necessary. Joliffe's motivation for trying to solve the mystery himself is a little hazy -- told but not shown -- and there's no real mystery to the mystery, but the writing is just... lovely. Apparently the main character was featured in a different series by the same author first, and now I may go back and pick those up, too.
