This is almost a prequel to Collapse: all about how humans are differentiated from our chimpanzee cousins. (Hint: Not very much at all, it turns out.) Some of it's conjecture but mostly it's fascinating. I read this quickly and resented every time I had to put it down to go to bed or work. If you're interested in why people do things like kill each other and destroy their environments, this is a book to pick up.

Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed by Jared Diamond
Fascinating. Awesome. Terrifying. Required reading. The book boils down to all the environmental problems that destroyed the Anasazi, the Maya, Easter Island, etc. and what that means for our blatant disregard for natural resources and pollution today. Yiiiiiiiiiikes. I love Diamond's writing style, and while I'm not sure all his conclusion make 100% sense, it's still terrifying to even think about.
